Pure tone audiometry is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss and thus providing a basis for diagnosis and management.

An audiometry exam tests your ability to hear sounds. Sounds vary, based on their loudness (intensity) and the speed of sound wave vibrations (tone). Hearing occurs when sound waves stimulate the nerves of the inner ear. The sound then travels along nerve pathways to the brain.

The test measures the very softest sounds you can hear at each frequency tested. This part of the test is called pure tone audiometry. Speech audiometry is another component of most hearing tests, and it uses recorded or live speech instead of pure tones.
